Sea Kayaker Magazine Readers Choice Award

Kyle Steward

In the summer of 2009 I joined James and Dympna of Learn to Kayak for an intro to sea kayaking evening. We went through the basics and headed out for a leisurely paddle. At the end of the evening I asked James if he could show me an "eskimo roll”. James set up, capsized and recovered, from that moment I was hooked!

That fall I was taking off to university where time and finances would be limited. I made it my mission to graduate and reward my accomplishment with my first sea kayak.

Well, I did it! I graduated and bought myself a WS Zephyr 160 (to be honest it was a few months before graduation, I was too excited! Sure would have been awkward if I failed my finals...) with ambitions to develop my rolling and skills to become an instructor.

Well, here I am today with 4 kayaks, my Paddle Canada Level 2 Skills, Basic Kayak Skills Instructor and Level 1 instructor certification coming full circle to work for the amazing people who got it all started!

The staff work great as a teaching team and use funny metaphors and faces to help you remember techniques. I highly recommend Learn to Kayak and hope to see them again during the summer.
